Which games work

The list is NVIDIA's, so it is never out of date.

Frame Generation arrives in new titles and in patches constantly, so any list we printed here would be wrong within a month. NVIDIA keeps the official one. Every game on it with Frame Generation is a game Project Framegen can unlock on your card.

You do not have to match anything by hand, either. The app scans all six launchers, works out which of your installed games have a frame generation path, and says so plainly when one does not.

Project Framegen carries an anti-cheat detector. It reads the game folder for EasyAntiCheat, BattlEye, PunkBuster, EA AntiCheat, Riot Vanguard and Denuvo Anti-Cheat, and it recognises these titles by name for the kernel and server side systems that leave nothing on disk. Every one of them is flagged red before you can inject.

Four steps, in this order.

The order matters, step four especially. Skip it and you get crashes instead of frames.

Scan

Framegen finds your installed games across Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, GOG and Rockstar, and pulls the real cover art for each one.

Click a cover. Framegen has already worked out which .exe is the actual game, past the launcher shims and helpers.

Pick a multiplier

More is not better. Here is where it turns.

The multiplier decides how many frames get invented between each pair of real ones. Two and three are clean almost everywhere. Four is where some games start to break up. Five and six we would rather you didn't.

Sweet spot

The best balance we have found. Noticeably smoother than 2× and still clean in the great majority of single player titles. This is the default for a reason.

Careful

Too much for some games. Worth trying, but the moment you see judder or the frame pacing goes uneven, drop back to 3×. Do not fight it.

Avoid

Expect stutter. There is almost no case where this is the right answer, and the frames stop feeling connected to what you are doing.

Avoid

It will make your game stutter. We do not recommend it at all. Stay in the 2× to 3× range and you will actually enjoy the result.

The hardware reality

Framegen can fake a 4090's name. Not its memory.

This is the single thing that decides whether you get a big smooth gain or a stuttery mess. Every generated frame has to live in VRAM, and frame generation uses a lot of it. If your card is short on memory the frames have nowhere to go, and your game stutters instead of speeding up.

You will have a great time

  • Plenty of VRAM. 8 GB is workable, 12 GB and up is comfortable. More memory means more headroom for the generated frames.
  • FreeSync or G-Sync on. Variable refresh is the perfect partner for frame gen. It smooths the generated frames out and kills most of the remaining judder.
  • A healthy base frame rate. Around 50 fps and up before frame gen gives the multiplier something real to work with.
  • Single player games. No anti-cheat, no risk, and the exact scenario frame gen was built for.

You will have a rough time

  • A low end GPU. Be straight with yourself here. If your card is entry level the VRAM is simply too low, and this will not run well for you.
  • 4 to 6 GB of VRAM. Frame gen eats memory. With this little, expect stutter rather than smoothness, and stay at 2× if you try at all.
  • A very low base frame rate. Multiplying 20 fps still feels like 20 fps in your hands. Frame gen smooths the picture, it does not fix the controls.
  • Competitive multiplayer. Anti-cheat plus added latency. Wrong tool, wrong place.
Three rules

Follow these and it just works.

Rule one

Launch injected games through the app

Only ever start an injected game from inside Project Framegen. Boot it straight from Steam, Epic or a desktop shortcut and you will get errors and crashes, because the spoof never loaded.

Rule two

Wrong exe? Take the other one

If the selected executable does not start the game, or the injection clearly did not take, pick the other .exe from the dropdown and run it again. Big games often ship two, and only one of them is the real one.

Rule three

Turn on FreeSync or G-Sync

Switch variable refresh on in your monitor's menu and in your driver panel. It is the single biggest quality difference you can make, because generated frames land far more evenly.

The honest part

So what are the downsides?

Every one of these is a real trade-off. We would rather you read them now than find them after you have paid.

Multiplayer can get your account banned. Injecting files into an online game is exactly what anti-cheat systems are built to catch. Framegen flags those titles bright red before you inject, but the decision is yours. Treat this as a single player tool.

It is hungry for VRAM

This is the big one. On low VRAM cards the generated frames do not fit, and your game stutters instead of speeding up.

You must launch from the app

Injected games only work when started from Framegen. Launching them any other way ends in errors or a crash.

A little extra input lag

Generated frames arrive after the fact, so they add latency. Keep Reflex on and your base frame rate up and you will barely notice.

High multipliers judder

Push past 4× and most games break up. Five and six are on the dial, but we do not recommend them to anyone.

Not every game supports it

Some engines have no frame gen path at all. Framegen tells you up front rather than failing silently once you are in.

Results vary a lot by hardware

It spoofs a 4090's identity, not its silicon. Weaker cards gain less, sometimes a great deal less.

If something goes wrong

Almost everything is one of these five.

The game crashes or throws an error on startup
You almost certainly launched it outside the app. Injected games must be started from inside Project Framegen, because that is what loads the spoof before the game comes up. Close the game, open Framegen, and launch it from there. If you had already made a desktop shortcut, delete it so you do not reach for it out of habit.
The game does not start at all, or the injection did not take
You have the wrong executable selected. Open the game's .exe dropdown and pick the other one, then inject and launch again. Plenty of games ship a launcher stub next to the real binary and there is no reliable way to tell them apart from the outside. If the first pick does not work, the second one usually does.
My frame rate went up but the game feels worse
Two likely causes. Either the multiplier is too high, so drop from 4× to 3×, or from 3× to 2×, and see if it settles. Or your base frame rate is too low for frame gen to build on. Turn the in-game settings down until you are around 50 fps before frame gen, then let the multiplier work from there. Also check that FreeSync or G-Sync is actually switched on.
The frame rate is high but everything stutters
That is the VRAM ceiling. Frame generation uses a lot of video memory, and when there is not enough the generated frames cannot be held, which shows up as stutter rather than as a lower number. Lower your texture quality and resolution first, then drop the multiplier to 2×. On a low VRAM card that may be as far as it goes.
I want my game back exactly as it was
Open Framegen, select the game, hit Clean. Every file the app placed is removed, including the mod's own leftovers, and the game goes back to booting normally from its own launcher. Nothing is installed into Windows, and your drivers were never touched.

Can I get banned?
In an online game with anti-cheat, yes. Placing files next to a game and launching it through another process is precisely the pattern those systems look for. Framegen flags multiplayer titles in red before you inject, and we will tell you the same thing here: use it on single player games only. Doing otherwise is at your own risk.
Do I need an NVIDIA RTX card?
No, that is the entire point. The 4090 identity is what convinces the game to expose frame generation on hardware that is normally locked out of it. On non-NVIDIA cards the FSR based path is used instead. What varies is how much you gain, and that comes down to your GPU and its VRAM.
Does it change my real hardware, drivers or Windows?
No. It changes what one game is told while that game is running, by placing files in that game's own folder. Nothing is written into Windows, no driver is modified, no service is installed. Hit Clean and the folder goes back to how you found it.
Is it useful if I do not care about frame generation?
Yes, and plenty of people use it exactly that way. It scans Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, GOG and Rockstar into one library with real cover art, works out the right executable for every game, and lets you set graphics, resolution and upscaling per title. You can launch everything you own from one window and never touch the multiplier.
Will it double my frame rate?
On a card with enough VRAM and a healthy base frame rate, a large gain is normal. That is what the multiplier does. On a low VRAM card it can gain very little or actively feel worse. Use the lab on this page with your own numbers before you buy, and take the verdict it gives you seriously.
